There are twenty-six golf courses spread all throughout the Dominican Republic. Our more experienced readers may already be familiar with courses designed by Pete Dye, of which there are five on the island – which includes three resort courses and two private ones.

On top of these impressive escapes, the Dominican Republic is also privy to having ten golf courses listed in the Top 50 for islands across the Caribbean and Atlantic.

These impressive rankings are due in part to a rejuvenation project that has been under development on the North Coast. Specifically, the “Teeth of the Dog” course has maintained a number one rank. Recently, there was also a tournament called the Puerto Plata DR Open (North Coast), which is the first of its kind for this caliber of golfing.

The photos below were taken by Rich as he was driving home from Puerto Plata one evening. Although I’m not much of a golfer myself, the natural beauty of the golf course against the backdrop of Mt. St. Isabelle is a sight to behold.

I’ve listed the details about some of Rich’s favourite courses on the North Coast so that you have them all in one place, and we hope to see you here one day to hit the driving range for yourself.

  1. Playa Dorada Golf Club: Founded in 1976 and designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., this course is located in Puerto Plata and boasts 18 holes (71 par), spread over 6,804 yards. You can see a mountain, Isabel de Torres, directly south of the course when you’re at the seventh hole. As far as the greenery, the course has mahogany and almond trees, coconut palms, and 50-year-old palm trees.

    Puerto Plata DR Open

  2. Los Mangos Golf Course: Located in Costambar, Puerto Plata, this course is located only 40 minutes away from Sosua. There are nine holes, and vegetation includes fruit trees such as mango, lime, and coconut.  
  3. Playa Grande Golf Course: Also designed by Robert Trent Jones, there are 18 holes (72 par) over 7,085 yards. This course is newer, and was opened in 1997.
